Diploma of Community Services Study in Australia
This qualification reflects the roles of community services, case management and social housing workers involved in the managing, co-ordinating and/or delivering of person-centred services to individuals, groups and communities.
At this level, workers have specialised skills in community services and work autonomously under broad directions from senior management. Workers are usually providing direct support to individuals or groups of individuals. Workers may also have responsibility for the supervision of other workers and volunteers and/or case management; program coordination or the development of new business opportunities.
Course Structure / Units Of Competency
The Diploma of Community Services requires the successful completion of 16 units of competency.
Core Units

- Develop workplace communication strategies
- Analyse impacts of sociological factors on clients in community work and services
- Manage and promote diversity
- Manage legal and ethical compliance
- Facilitate workplace debriefing and support processes
- Reflect on and improve own professional practice
- Manage work health and safety
Elective Units
- Assess co-existing needs
- Coordinate complex case requirements
- Develop, facilitate and review all aspects of case management
- Provide case management supervision
- Facilitate community participation and social inclusion
- Lead the work team
- Manage risk
- Provide advocacy and representation services
Minimum education standard
Year 12 or equivalent
Study Pathway and Career Opportunities
After completion of Diploma of Community Services (Case Management), students may wish to undertake Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management or a pathway to higher education such as:
- Bachelor of Social Work
- Bachelor of Human Services
If a qualification is only partly achieved, a Statement of Attainment is issued for successful achievement of a single or multiple unit of competency.
